No competition between Toyota & General Motors: GM executive

Despite popular notion, there is no race between General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. to produce a rechargeable car.

According to Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, Toyota’s plug in hybrid has a much shorter range when driven on batteries, and needs a petrol engine to go any further. However, the Volt runs only on electricity, but carries a small petrol engine to recharge the batteries when run out of charge.

According to Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe, Toyota plans to bring forward its delivery of is plug-in hybrids from 2010 to the end of 2009. Contrarily, the Volt is only due in the showrooms by late 2010.

The Volt uses lithium ion batteries to take the car 40 or 50 miles on a single charge, thereafter a petrol engine comes on to recharge the batteries. Contrarily, Toyota will use both petrol as well as electricity to power its hybrid.
