"Industry-academia collaboration is key to foster research and innovation in the automotive sector" said Dr R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Adviser, Government of India while delivering his inaugural address at the Conference on "Automotive R & D Trends 2015" organised by the Tamil Nadu Technology Development & Promotion Centre of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here today.
Dr Chidambaram said that industry need to leverage on the capabilities of institutions in research activities in the areas of new product development, design and process innovation to sustain its competitiveness and to provide value addition to customers on product innovation and creativity.
He said that research and innovation in design and processes should lead to improve the safety systems in vehicles, fuel efficiency, CO2 reduction and provide viable options for use of alternate raw materials to address climate change issues.
He said that the transport sector in the country accounts for 25% of energy consumption and urged for an Intelligent Transport System solutions for all classes of vehicles to enable efficient traffic management so as to reduce traveling time, fuel consumption and CO2 emission.
Some of the new technologies underway in the automotive industry include vehicle tracking and control systems; WiFi Vehicle Tracking Systems besides proposed new project proposals for Autorickshaw / Taxi Telematics, said Dr Chidambaram.
He also said that the fully electric or fully-hydrogen powered cars would become a reality in the next 15-20 years.
Mr Srivats Ram, Managing Director, Wheels India Limited, in his special address said that design innovation in the automotive industry would reduce operating cost, enhance fuel efficiency and address safety and environment issues. He also said that process innovation on computer aided simulation and system integration at design stage would enhance overall vehicle efficiency.
Earlier in his opening remakrs, Dr Arun Jaura, Conference Chairman & Chief Technology Officer, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said that the automotive manufacturing is found to be the sixth largest business sector in terms of Reserch & Development (R & D). Innovation, IPR and leadership are key focus areas necessary to nurture R & D initiatives, he said.
