Despite the falling sales of trucks and sports utility vehicles elsewhere, SUV’s are still very popular in INDIA.

Ford sold 60 % less of what it normally could. Toyota’s SUV sales fell by 38%.

This trend can be understood by examining the strategy most OEM’s played. They added newer models, with each better than the last one.

They got the right buyers to take interest in their products, and ultimately managed good sales figures.  

According to Dilip Chenoy, Director General of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), felt that the SUVs’ that are being sold here are very different from the SUV’s being sold elsewhere.

“The SUVs here are not really your proverbial gas guzzlers,” he mentioned. 

“These are inexpensive, very small and low capacity vehicles, mainly crossovers.

Manufacturers even keep the fuel efficiency factor in mind while making the sales pitch.” He added further.
