The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to make “baby seats” compulsory for all passenger cars from 2010. The recent decision comes in a bid to make Indian roads more child-friendly.
An official from the ministry informed that the planned implementation schedule is two years for new car models and three years for existing models. The government is also planning to introduce it for commercial goods vehicles and passenger buses.
Meanwhile, the Central Motor Vehicle Rules-Technical Standing Committee is formulating automotive industry standards to in order to make CRS compulsory. The ministry held a high-level meeting in this connection and the automobile manufacturers have agreed on the need for CRS in passenger cars.
The CRS is defined by the ministry as an “arrangement of components (combination of straps, buckles, adjustment devices, supplementary devices such as carry cots etc.) capable of being anchored to power driven vehicles” — will, despite being mandatory fitment, be removable.
