As developed auto markets such as the US and Europe are dipping in the red, Companies such as General Motors, Maruti Suzuki (MSIL) and Volkswagen have commenced work on the ‘Made-in-India’ car. It is also speculated that they are in the final stages of drafting the plan. This step is taken by Global car manufacturers to cement their position in the country and suit the preferences of the Indian buyer.
The Made-in-India car would be developed entirely in the country, using the technical expertise of Indian engineers. The car will however not be restricted to Indian markets alone. Though the US -based General Motors Corporation, is close to bankruptcy GM said it will not incur financial problems in carrying out the proposed strategy.
It is likely that the Bangalore based technical centre would play a pivotal role in the manufacture and designing of the made in India car. Maruti prepares to increase the headcount of engineers to 1,000 by 2010 to facilitate the India-built car. Keeping in mind emerging markets like India, Hyundai launched the i10 in India, before doing so in any other foreign destinations. Volkswagen, the German auto giant, will also build an ‘India car’ from scratch, and the plans are still in the developmental stage.
