Unaffected by the ongoing global recession, Volkswagen AG has categorically stated that its investment plans for India have remained intact. There would be no lay offs and is confident there would be a demand for cars in the furure.
The Wolfsburg-based company will also start selling vans in India in the first half of next year and the Polo-based compact car in 2010. Presently, VW India assembles its luxury sedans – Passat and Jetta-in India at Skoda's Aurangabad plant and VW is readying to set up a green field facility at Chakan in Pune. This plant would have a capacity to manufacture 110,000 cars annually.
Volkswagen India will also be growing exponentially in the next two years to cover most of the Tier I and Tier II cities. It will set up 15 dealerships in India this year and 100 by the end of 2011. Volkswagen India, has notched up 150 units of its mid-segment car model, Jetta, till October against a target of 200 units for 2008.
