Volvo to go slow on the assembly Unit

Volvo is prepared to play a waiting game in the Indian luxury car market although Volvo has created a dealer infrastructure that is comparable to the best. When asked to comment Paul de Voijs, Managing Director; Volvo Car India, said it was too early to comment on the same.

Volvo had made its presence in the Indian luxury car space since last March. Last year Volvo sold 100 units which were imported into the country in CBU format. Luxury cars tend to slow down a bit slower than other segments but at the same time they manage to catch up sooner too.

Paul de Voijs mentioned that Volvo is keenly watching the volume growth in India. It is apparently less. Passenger car market in India is worth 1.4 million units and total number of luxury cars sold is 8,000 units. Volvo would be keen to know where the import duty headed. He added that the European factories of Volvo had capacities to expand.

He mentioned that although Volvo began with three dealers in India, it is planning to expand with 7 more in Kochi, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kolkata.
