Porsche, the German sports car major has forayed into the luxury car segment with the launch of Panamera, its first luxury sedan. The car was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show, with a hope to beat the gloom in the global auto market.
The new four-door sports car, Panamera is Porsche's first sedan after more than six decades of manufacturing sports coupes. It is expected to compete with models like the Maserati Quattro Porte and Mercedes-Benz CLS.
Sales of the Panamera would start by September this year and India will be among the first markets that it drives into, the cost estimated to be upwards of Rs 1.4 crore. The entry-level Panamera S is powered by a 4.8-litre V8, developing maximum output of 400 bhp and racing up to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds. The automaker plans a hybrid drive version later.
The Panamera would be available in India in limited numbers as only around 50 units are believed to have been reserved for sale in the market.
Porsche's current line-up in India includes sports cars like the Cayenne the 911, Boxster and Cayman all of which enter through the import route and cost between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore.
