BMW developing cars that will help pedestrians avoid danger

A car-to-car communication system that is being developed by BMW offers more protection to pedestrians by sensing situations and people that motorists usually cannot see. Describing a typical situation, when a child jumps suddenly onto a road from between two parked vehicles, a transponder carried by the child would signal to the moving vehicle with the help of a transponder.

As part of the AMULETT research project, this study is aimed at preventing accidents with the use of sensoring and tracking technology. The transponders carried by the persons are networked to onboard systems present in the car, which also can be linked to those present in other vehicles. Transponders can be installed in a variety of accessories carried by people or children like school bags, mobile phones, and walking sticks.

If the system determines a dangerous situation such as an impeding collision, it warns the driver with the help of a signal that comes up on the head-up display. In case the driver does not respond to the warning, the system activates a braking procedure automatically.

According to statistics released by the German Government, around 48 percent of child accident victims who were aged between six and fourteen ran on to the road without watching out for oncoming traffic. According to other research, in nearly 40 percent of the cases, drivers could not react in time.
