At present, Microsoft Zune and the xBox 360 are two individual entities from Microsoft that are doing well in the market presently. However, an amalgamated product combined from the two is distinct possibility according to anonymous yet reliable sources.

Currently termed as ‘xYz’ it is in the final design stages. The Y is the fulcrum that connects the ‘X’ (xBox 360) with the ‘Z’ (Zune) to design a completely new form of entertainment that can provide both gaming and media playback to users. Though it is said to provide internet related services, it does not have a phone network.

According to sources, the device is a completely new concept, and a strong competitor to Apple, Sony, Nintendo and Google. Though it is a converged device, it is not a Zune 0050hone and will not be in competition with its Windows Mobile customers. According to a source, it is a Live Anywhere device. It is very likely that this handheld will execute Live Anywhere so that the digital storefronts of Microsoft will gets unified to the system for music and movie playback. With this feature, it will be possible to play audio and video files on the xYz and Xbox360 also.

The device is expected to feature a WVGA touch screen and a range of hardware features that have not yet been introduced in the market. The ‘xYz’ may also incorporate WiMax or graphics processing chipsets. According to a source, “There will be a single online marketplace; the lines between the Zune, Xbox Live and Sky marketplaces will blur when the handheld launches.”

Further rumors suggest that it is possible to download games on the Xbox 360 consoles and also play them on the “xYz” and vice versa. Moreover, the device could be powered by Nvidia Tegra, which currently does not support Xbox 360 games. Though this handheld device is officially unannounced, one will have to wait the share the excitement and the questions arising out of this story.
