Bajaj Auto Limited commences the manufacture of bikes in China that would cater to other markets like Nigeria, where there is an immense demand for low-cost bikes. It has been learnt that India’s second largest two-wheeler maker has already shipped 1,000 made-in-China bikes to Nigeria through India.
These bikes sold in Nigeria are branded as Boxer, as PTI claims that unbranded bikes are quite prominent there. Presently BAL is eyeing to churn out 10,000 bikes per month at its Chinese unit. It is believed that the ‘Boxer’ branding will be used in India as well when it would be launched here by end-2009 or early-2010.
The company refused to reveal any details of the bike although there are speculations that the bike manufactured is a 125cc bike and in rupee terms, it would cost between Rs. 20,000 to 24,000.
According to yet another media report, there is indication that Bajaj Auto will also be rolling out a new 100cc bike in the domestic market, in order to shore up its presence in the volume-driven entry level bike market. The company is contemplating working on a new scooter with an USP; entrenched in specific technology that is likely to take a couple of years to be complete. A significant part of production has been moved to its Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand which reduced the tax outgo by Rs. 8 crore.
The other launches lined up for Bajaj include larger cargo 3-wheeler in August ’09 and a passenger 3-wheeler in Dec ’09.Followed by this, is the low-cost (ULC) car project being commissioned with Renault and Nissan.
Bajaj Auto said it would be rolling out a new product with KTM in India next year. This will be a platform for a bigger bike which will be launched in 2010. It will be designed in Austria and assembled in India. The second platform will be ready in 2011.
