Motorcycles and automobiles of today are equipped with fuel injection technology. The carburetor has been dispatched for good and innovative technologies in the ignition system are the key features embedded at our Indian OEMs. This is done in order to help keep the combustion process as clean as possible, especially of the tail pipe emissions. There is however a limit to how far these measures could go in meeting the stringent BSIV norms.

Although Hero Honda was first to dispense the carburetor with its Glamour 125cc, it was actually the Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-FI which truly spread fuel injection's gospel of virtue. The extra smoothness of the power delivery, across range and the consistent power delivery plus the enhanced riding pleasure were the key attributes which bikers reveled in, when they rode the big Pulsar. The TVS Apache RTR160 with fuel injection followed and following this was the Yamaha YZF R-15.

The biggest challenge to HMSI would certainly be in its pricing strategy. The leader can subsidize technology to a certain extent. This will only help bring the benefits to a larger section of the motorcycling world thereby making it a cleaner and better riding environment. It reduces manufacturing costs so that the fuel injected gizmo could be well brought in sync to affordable levels by spreading it out over a very large base.

HMSI is as of now a million units a year firm and given that the cost of replacing even half that number with fuel injection should result in strong economies of scale; can hammer the price down to very sensible levels. HMSI would certainly do very well and also allow it to excel where it matters most - in the mushrooming executive commuter class of the market.
