Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced that its unnamed low-cost car is likely to be launched in India by 2011. It would be positioned below the Santro model. As per the earlier reports, the fuel-efficient low cost car is estimated to be priced at around US$ 3,500, though no official comments have been made by the company.

The all new vehicle which is still in the conceptual stage at its R&D centre in Korea, is likely to be more expensive than Tata Motors' Nano, Bajaj's ULC and GM's upcoming mini-car. Work is on at the Indian R&D centre in Hyderabad and the Indian engineers will work closely with their Korean counterparts to develop a mini-car. The car will be rolled out from its new unit at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It would be catering to both the domestic as well as the overseas markets.

HMIL managing director, H.S. Lheem, told reporters here "We are developing a small car in the entry level range and it should hit the market by 2011." He added "We also plan to launch new variants in the mid and small size segment. There is a lot of demand for more variants. Punjab and southern states Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have voiced demand for LPG variant. Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmadabad are asking for CNG variants. As the first step in that direction we will be launching the diesel variant of Hyundai i20 in the latter part of this year”.

Media reports indicate that the Korean auto manufacturer plans to expand its presence in India and is looking at Gujarat as one among the many states for it future plans, though there has been no official announcement made by the company yet.
