General Motors is planning to develop a small car which will be its cheapest globally, at a possible price tag of under Rs 2 lakh. GM Group V-P, Nick Reilly told newspaper that the company was considering developing a car that would be positioned below spark and presently there is opportunity for a car below the Spark. But he declined that it would be a Tata Nano Equivalent.
The car is likely to be positioned for markets like Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America and China. Karl Slym, President of GM's Indian subsidiary confirmed that India would be the lead market for the R&D of the car.
In addition to this, GM has reiterated that markets like India and China would be key to its revival, especially when numbers remain depressed in its home market US. Reilly also said small cars would be the key to growth in the future and GM would focus more on their development.
