The cumulative production data for April-May 2009 shows production growth of 8.28 percent over April – May 2008. In May 2009, overall production grew by 6.53% over the same month last year. In April 2009, production grew at 10.19 percent.
Domestic Sales
Passenger Vehicles segment during April-May 2009 grew marginally at 1.68 percent over same period last year. Passenger Cars grew by 3.29 percent, Utility Vehicles fell by (-) 14.56 percent and Multi Purpose Vehicles grew by 24.49 percent in this period. However, the sales in May 2009 for passenger vehicles fell into negative territory with growth rate being (-) 0.79 percent over May 2008.
Cumulative sales of Commercial Vehicles Segment continued to register de-growth. The segment grew at (-) 13.08 percent during April-May 2009 as compared to the same period last year. While Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles registered de-growth at (-) 39.64 percent, Light Commercial Vehicles grew at 19.51 percent. In May 2009, commercial vehicles sales fell by 14.77 percent compared to May 2008. M&HCV fell by 37.51 percent and LCV grew by 11.83 percent.
Three Wheelers sales recorded a growth rate of 3.53 percent in April-May 2009. While Passenger Carriers grew by 13.04 percent during April-May 2009, Goods Carriers declined at (-) 20.94 percent. In May 2009, three wheelers sales grew at 5.28 percent.
Two Wheelers registered a growth of 13.06 percent during April-May 2009. Mopeds, Scooters and Motorcycles grew by 22.17 percent, 15.13 percent and 12.23 percent respectively. Electric two wheelers segment registered a growth rate of (-) 46.36 percent. In the month of May, two wheelers sales registered a growth of 12.45 percent.
Exports
The period from April-May 2009 saw automobile exports declining with growth rate being (-) 2.69 percent with all segments except Passenger vehicles registering de-growth.
Commercial Vehicles, Three Wheelers and Two Wheelers segments recorded growth of (-) 45.61 percent, (-) 15.44 percent and (-) 9.68 percent respectively during April – May 2009. Passenger Vehicles segment grew by 36.57 percent in this period. In May 2009, however, overall exports grew by 5.00 percent with Two Wheelers and Passenger Vehicles registering positive growth.
