TVS Motors is launching its Flame brand of motorcycles with name changed, but the new SR125 will omit the controversial twin-spark plug technology over which the Chennai-based company is locked in a two-year old legal battle with rival Bajaj Auto.
The Supreme Court had issued an interim order that allows TVS to continue producing the Flame series but had restricted from marketing them. The order comes on the back of an interim stay from the Madras High Court which effected to start TVS’ plants to manufacture Flame.
Flame will be an infringement of its patented twin-spark plug technology claimed Bajaj. TVS holding back this argument said that it si san old technology and Bajay had no patent claim over it.
SR125 will hit the roads late this month along with another bike from the TVS stable, the Apache 180, say the people who are familiar with the development. Both the new brands are integrated part of the TVS efforts to encash the expected sales in the surge just ahead of the monsoon, traditionally a good season in rural markets.
Bajaj sales were better in the month of May i.e. down by 8% than in the previous month where decline was witnessed 26%. TVS’ motorcycle sales went down 8.5% in April, and 2.2% in May.
