General Motors India (GMI) is taking a U-turn by putting a lid on its German brand Opel’s operation, keeping its fortunes steady in India. In order to keep up the good image in India, the company will be stepping up its Chevrolet’s brand communication.

In 1944, General Motors was formed as a joined venture in order to produce and sell the Opel branded vehicles  where 50 per cent was owned by Hindustan Motors and 50 per cent by General Motors. In 1999, Hindustan Motors was out and General Motors continued to produce Opel cars at the Halol facility until when it started production of Chevrolet vehicles there in 2003.

Opel, commonly known is Adam Opel GmbH, a German automaker. Adam Opel GmbH was found on 21st January 1863 and started the automaker business in 1899 and was acquired by General Motors Corporation in 1929.

Opel is the GM's largest European brand as a part of GM Europe and GM's core European business is formed by joining together with Vauxhall Motors in the UK

GM was drawn towards bankruptcy due to the global financial crisis in 2009 and thus the future of Opel was thrown in to uncertainty.

The announcement was done that a deal had been reached to transfer New GM Europe (Opel plus Vauxhall, minus Saab) assets to a separate company majority-owned by a consortium led by Sberbank of Russia (35 per cent), Magna International of Canada (20 per cent), and Opel employees and car dealers (10 per cent). GM is expected to keep a 35 per cent minority stake in the new company on 30th May 2009.
