Mitsubishi Motors production, sales & export figures for May 2009

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today announced global production, as well as domestic sales and export figures for May 2009.

Production: total and in Japan
Total global production for May came in at 44,902 units, a decline of 54.6 percent over May 2008 and the fifteenth consecutive monthly decrease since March 2008. Production volume in Japan at 24,793 units was down 60.0 percent as a 65.0 percent decrease in passenger car (20,107 units) output saw year-on-year output fall for the seventh consecutive month despite a 3.6 percent increase in commercial vehicle (4,686 units).

Sales in Japan
Vehicle sales in Japan in May totaled 9,206 units, a 21.9 percent decrease year-on-year and the 21st consecutive monthly decline since September 2007. Sales of passenger cars at 6,457 units were 23.9 percent down while sales of commercial vehicles at 2,749 units were 18.4 percent down. Registered vehicle sales volume at 3,156 units was 14.1 percent down on the same month last year. Minicar sales volume at 6,050 units was 25.4 percent down.

Production overseas
Overseas production volume totaled 20,109 units, 45.5 percent down over May last year and the fifteenth consecutive monthly decline. By region, output in North America was 100 percent down as all production has been halted due to very slow sales in the United States. In Europe, output was 16.7 percent up thanks to firm sales of the Colt in Germany.

Export shipments from Japan
Total exports from Japan of 11,795 units were 77.0 percent down on May 2008, marking the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year decreases. Exports to Asia at 2,037 units were 53.7 percent down. Exports to Europe at 2,313 units were 91.1 percent down due partly to slow sales in Russia. Exports to North America at 1,759 units were 54.0 percent down.
