Gartner Inc, the latest report of leading IT research and advisory company said that, “While sales of personal computers worldwide are likely to decline by six per cent in 2009, Indian PC market will be relatively less affected by the economic slowdown and would see a decline of 0.8 per cent”. 

The report says, worldwide, PC shipments would reach 27.40-crore units in 2009, a six per cent decline from 2008 shipments of 29.20-crore, while the Indian PC market will be flat in 2009, witnessing a decline of 0.8 per cent from 2008, which is an upward revision from its earlier projection made in February 2009 of 3.7 per cent decline.

PC market is expected by Gartner to post positive growth in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for a healthy market recovery in 2010 with units forecast to grow 10.3 per cent.

Considering the Gartner’s preliminary forecast from mid-May its latest forecast is somewhat brighter, which anticipated a 6.6 per cent unit decline in 2009, and considerably stronger than its last detailed forecast from March, which projected a 9.2 per cent unit decline.

George Shiffler, Gartner’s Research Director said that, “PC unit growth was stronger than we expected in all markets but Eastern Europe in the first quarter of 2009. However, professional shipments continued to struggle, and we think much of the growth in consumer units was due to vendors and the channel restocking inventories rather than an upsurge in demand”.
