Synovate, a leading global market research firm’s new study findings reveals that six in ten people would choose to buy a green car over a dream car, even if money was no object. But India is totally different. Car buyers all over the world may be going green with increasing environment problems but Indians still prefers to have the best models and luxury and fashion statement matters more.
The Synovate’s study reveals that India tops the list of countries where dream cars are more popular than green cars. The reprt is based on the survey done on more than 13,500 people in 18 markets on the green vs dream issue found 47% Indians voting for luxury vehicles, with just 30% choosing environment friendly cars. South Africa was the only one higher having 53% respondents preferring dream cars over 22% for green vehicles.
Sumit Arora Associate Director Synovate said that, “India is going through an evolving phase where we haven’t seen a whole lot of luxury cars till very recently. People here are ambitious and continue to be aspirational. That makes India a very different market from Europe, which is going in for smaller and greener vehicles”.
This attitude is helping to the luxury car market in India as unlike in the west, it is in the midst of a deep recession, but India’s economy continues to grow. What amazes is that these brands have recently entered the market! In India the sales trend is much higher even better than mass market models and even better than rest of the world.
Although the current market is just around 6000- 7000 units but due to this love of people towards luxury brands, several top brands are migrating towards India. Mercedes Benz and BMW assembly options are here, while Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, Bentley and Jaguar and Land Rover sell all-imported vehicles in the country. Italian car maker Fiat has already indicated it will introduce its Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands in India.
Peter Kronschnabl President BMW India said that, “So big need not mean ‘not green’. All the engines we bring to India have the latest technology. Our carbon dioxide emissions are the lowest in the luxury car segment.” In any case, premium car makers say luxury and green were not necessarily mutually exclusive.
Synovate’s survey clearly took the favor of the green technology all over the world and leading is Germany, where nearly 60% respondents voted for eco-friendly vehicles. The people were in favor of the green cars across Asia too, with the 53% of respondents in that country choosing green compared with 21% for luxury.
Thailand had 77% supporters for green cars, while South Korea had 76%. The survey of the world showed 37% supporters overall saying green cars is their choice, with 22% clarified that their dream car was also a green car. US, the world’s largest luxury car market had 35% of the supporters for luxury vehicles while 23% for green wheels.
Many consumers said that they would buy a new car in next one year, even in India. Where out in the whole world average of only 15% said yes in comparison with India’s 38% said yes when queried about the chances of buying a new car in 12 months. While 24% for Egypt and 23% in Turkey admitted the same. By contrast, just 6% of people of survey in Germany and Australia indicated plans to buy a new.
