The 49th SIAM Annual Convention concluded with a magnificent evening awards ceremony with the Hon Finance Minister of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee present as the Chief Guest. To mark the Golden Jubilee of SIAM, Awards were given in four categories: The Mentor Award, instituted in 2003 and given out every alternate year, the President’s Award newly instituted in 2009, the Past President Award and the special Golden Jubilee Award.

Mr. Tapan Basu of Mahindra & Mahindra received the Mentor Award for his tireless work both at SIAM and in the field of alternative technologies. Four President’s Awards were given to illustrious members of the Indian automotive fraternity – Mr. R Seshasayee of Ashok Leyland, Mr. S Sandilya of Eicher Motors, Dr. Pawan Goenka of Mahindra & Mahindra and Dr. Wilfried Aulbur of Mercedes-Benz India.

Former SIAM president Dr. V Krishnamurthy received the Past President’s Award while the Golden Jubilee Award went to Mr. Brijmohan Lall Munjal of Hero Honda. All awardees received their awards from the Hon. Finance Minister. In his speech to SIAM, Mr. Mukherjee said that the “auto industry has a very important place in India. He went on to assert that India is one of the fastest growing markets and an attractive market too because of the spending power of young Indians today”.
