US auto major Ford’s Indian subsidiary is all set to expand its Chennai plant with an investment of $500 million. Ford India MD and President Michael Boneham told reporters that the company will be one of the major production hubs for the parent company’s operations in the Asia-African region.
The company is targeting to increase its production capacity to 2-lakh vehicles by 2010, which currently functions with zero automation so far; now, they are including 30% automation in it. Boneham said, “The overall investment plans for India will be implemented in the next two to three years”.
The company is also planning to introduce a new small car with unique features to stand in the competitive market. This small car along with other vehicles will be exported to Africa and the Asia-Pacific markets.
Moreover, the company will be setting up an engine plant adjacent to the existing Chennai plant to manufacture both diesel and petrol engines with an annual capacity of 250,000 units also and these engines will also be exported to different overseas market.
Ford India is already exporting the Ford Ikon car parts that are assembled in South Africa as fully-made cars and the Fiesta mid-size sedan to South East Asia.
