General Motors India, the wholly owned subsidiary of American carmaker General Motors Corporation is discussing to source electric vehicle technology from Reva, the largest Electric car Company in World and launch the new electric variant of its Chevrolet Spark small car in India and select overseas markets.

As per one of the company’s executives, the company is also looking forward to the technical collaboration and a joint venture with Bangalore based, Reva. The companies are awaiting for the approval from GM’s Detroit headquarters.

P Balendran, Vice President, GM India said that, “We have been pursuing opportunities for commercial application of alternative fuel options, including bio-diesel, jatropha arrangement with CSMCRI (Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute), electric, fuel cell, hydrogen etc, with many parties for quite some time” and added that their efforts are ongoing and they have nothing to announce as of now and told that as soon as they finalize their plans for introduction of any alternative fuel solutions, they will announce the same.

Using REVA to supply the drivetrain would allow significant cost savings permitting GM to sell the pure electrics at a low price point.

It is still unclear whether the pure electric Sparks would ever hit US roads, though GM has already stated it intends to launch the gas-powered Spark in the US market in 2011.

But for sure Indian market seems to be highly impressive to the Chevy (Chevrolet) brand. Moreover, the new venture will also prove the significance of electric vehicles in GM’s growth plans.

This new tie up and upcoming e-car matters a lot to GM because it will bring a great jump to its lost position due to the bankruptcy. The company will be able to sell cars with future technology and at competitive rates. With Gm, amny more companies are also looking forward to accept the new e-car technology as its eco-friendly as well as economic.
