With the increasing technology and the demand of electric vehicles, General Motors, India is joining hands with Bangalore based Reva to bring new electric cars in India.
According to General Motors India managing director Karl Slym, the initiative was "in line with government objectives to reduce fossil fuel dependence".
Slym said, "We are going to work closely with the central and state governments in India to develop infrastructure for electric vehicles charging and providing specific financial benefits to consumers".
The two companies have been collaborating for 10 months and have already created test models of the new vehicle, an all-electric version of the U.S. automaker's compact Chevrolet Spark and is confident to launch a car in next year.
The Bangalore-based automaker is currently exporting its models to 13 overseas markets including Europe and UK and plans are afoot to roll out the cars in South America and South-East Asia in the next few months.
GM is looking forward to get good benefits from the tie-up and expand its business in India as well as in many other foreign countries. Reilly acknowledged that they are looking for several energy alternatives and advanced technology options to meet the changing needs of customers around the world.
An all-electric car probably wouldn't be able to go more than 300 kilometers without recharging and India do not have enough sources for recharge stations yet.
GM recently opened a battery research lab in the U.S. to hasten development of electric and hybrid cars. Production of the Chevrolet Volt, a hybrid that can drive up to 40 miles without gasoline, is slated to start in the U.S. in late 2010.
With the electric cars being best option company is looking forward to talk to Govt and make some alternative solutions and launch the e-car nextyear in India. Reva had already launched its electric car in 2001.
More details are coming soon. So, stay tuned!
