Today, Research In Motion (RIM) together with the leading telecom firm Vodafone has launched the latest version of the Storm2 smartphone in seven European countries as well as South Africa.

The phone will be available in UL later this month and RIM's touch-screen smartphone features a capacitive touch-screen with new Surepress technology that provides tactile feedback when the display is pressed. It is the second generation of RIM's touch-screen smartphone, the BlackBerry Storm2.

The phone allows the user stay easily connected to people, places and things that matter most. The launch is scheduled with an eye on the ensuing festival season ahead of Christmas.

The latest storm 2 also adds 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a capability lacking in the original Storm launched last year. It also has GPS for maps and other location-based applications as well as quad-band GSM and HSPA.

The RIM BlackBerry Storm was riddled with bugs and performance issues, which were resolved with subsequent software updates, but still, the damage had been done. However, there are high hopes that the RIM BlackBerry Storm 2 will wash away all those bad memories and start afresh.

The new Storm 2 also has a Surepress, which uses an electronic pulse to provide feedback rather than the actual screen moving. It supports Blackberry OS 5, in which the Blackberry Browser is improved with faster JavaScript and CSS processing and support for Google Gears and BlackBerry Widgets. The handset comes with access to Blackberry App World, RIM's online application store. It also adds up an extensible memory up to 16GB and 256MB of Flash memory, plus 2GB of storage and many more features.

The company announced in a regulatory filing with the London Stock Exchange, “In the busy holiday gift buying period, customers in the UK and Ireland will be able to get the new smartphone first through Vodafone”.

As per news reports, Vodafone UK is offering the handset for no-money up-front on a 35-pound a month plan. The pricing would be announced by the individual in-country operating companies.
