Just imagine a combo of a mobile phone with a personal computer! It is none other than this generation ‘Kayak’. The mobile chip maker Qualcomm Inc announced on 27th Oct about the launch of its Rs 10,000 (around $210) personal computer alternative 'Kayak' in India in second half of 2010.

The San-Diego-based wireless technology provider is in talks with major Indian telecom service providers like and Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications to bring the product into India.

Prototypes of this Rs.10,000 device which offers high-speed broadband connectivity are ready and developers say trials start early next year and the product could be commercially available by end of 2010 in India and Nepal.

Prototypes for Kayak are already built. These look like a regular desk phones with a display, keyboard and mouse. The company had said last year that it would launch a 3G- enabled Internet access platform Kayak in the emerging markets to provide both connectivity and computing.

Qualcomm pioneered the code division multiple access (CDMA) technology used by more than 100 million mobile phone users in India and is set to begin trials of the low-cost Kayak early next year.

Qualcomm Inc Senior Vice-President Kanwalinder Singh told reporters, “We believe we can build a device consisting of display, keyboard and mouse for less than Rs 10,000. It will make Internet access simple, affordable and run for 9-10 hours. The device would also allow users to make calls”.

This new Kayak will target the rural emerging markets. The competition is already tough as the major chip maker Intel has introduced $400 Classmate PC. On top of this, the Government Of India have also plans to come up with a cheap PC alternative for Rs 500 to provide educational solutions in around 18,000 colleges of 400 universities in India.
