LG, a name in electronics revealed its roadmap for developing and releasing large-size OLED panels at the FPD International 2009, which takes place from Oct 28 to 30, 2009, at Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama City, Japan.
LCD is liquid crystal diode, whereas the organic light emitting diode (OLED) is made of a thin film of organic polymers. It relies on the same concept for using pixels to make the picture, but OLED doesn’t need a backlight because it lights itself (hence power savings). Thus OLED TVs are more power saving than LCDs.
LG Electronics Inc plans to release a 15-inch OLED TV with a panel developed by LG Display at the end of 2009, while it expects 40-inch OLED TVs as soon as 2012.
We can definitely see the progress of OLED technology since its inception. OLED TVs have been far too expensive to compete with LCD or plasma in larger sizes, but the manufacturing process is making great strides toward mitigating the cost.
OLED TV provides a better image and uses less power. The only drawback is prices and LG expects OLED TV materials to be cheaper than that of LCD TVs by 2016. If it comes to be true, than LCD TV sales would probably drop dramatically because there is no other reason to choose LCD except the money factor over OLED TVs.
