Fuel is going to be big issue soon in the world, with large number of vehicles running and fuel used for different things. The cheaper the fuel the higher the technology costs. The high maintenance and premium pricing of the diesel car has put a hold on people to buy it.
The things are changed with time now. With technology getting superior, fuel efficient and more environment-friendly, carmakers such as Mercedes, BMW, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki are planning a slew of diesel launches.
Mercedes Benz, the luxury car maker is all set to launch the new E-Class in diesel. BMW is getting ready to launch diesel models in the forthcoming auto expo. Hyundai is also in the line with diesel Sonata on its way. Ofcourse Maruti Suzuki will not be left behind, it is planning to launch diesel variant of SX4.
In fact, BMW, Mercedes and Audi sell more diesel variants than their petrol counterparts. After the launch of diesel variant of Toyota Fortuner SUV, sales of petrol variant of Honda CR-V is under pressure. The production of the former is learnt to be increased by more than 60 per cent in October. Toyota-Kirloskar Motors (TKM), makers of Corolla, Camry, Innova and the Fortuner, sells more than 99% of diesel variants.
Ankush Arora, VP, sales, marketing and after-sales of GM India says that, “Carmakers have begun stepping up production of diesel variants in recent months. A much advanced diesel technology is forcing car manufacturers to start looking at alternative solutions”. GM’s Optra diesel outsells the petrol variant by more than 75%.
Maruti Suzuki’s fast movers Swift and Dzire are selling 65% diesel variants and others like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors , Hyundai and Ford are jacking up production of the diesel models. Tata’s Indica and Indigo, Mahindra’s Logan, General Motors Optra,Cruze and Hyundai Verna and Sonata are seeing an increase in diesel model sales in the recent months.
Industry observers reveals that the Indian car market is poised for growth and could see a 50% rise in sales by ’10. There are also expectations of the current diesel car sales to grow from 31% to 55% share in market. Let us see the growth after all these new cars launch, here.
