The joint venture of Toyota Motors and Kirloskar Group, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today announced that it has crossed 4 lakh unit retail sales in India since its inception 11years ago in 1997.

The company has launched its first product, Qualis, in year 2000. Moreover, as per reports of few weeks ago, Toyota’s SUV Fortuner had broken booking records and the Japanese carmaker posted growth in August. There was 50% jump in sales in October in sales (year on year), during which time it sold 5,650 units.

Said Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director, (marketing), TKM, “This is a big step (achieving 4 lakh units) towards establishing Toyota as one of the major players in the Indian automobile market. This in fact could not have come at a better time for us, with the launch of the compact car in the Indian market next year.”

TKM is setting up its second manufacturing facility in Bangalore at an investment of Rs 3,200 crore to roll out a 'strategic' small car by early 2011. The company has also decided to increase output of the Fortuner by 60 per cent from January next year.

TKM has 93 dealerships at present and has firmed up plans to enhance it to 150 outlets before the launch of the compact car in 2011. The company also has target of increasing its market share from four per cent to 10 per cent by 2015 with the help of new compact cars. They are expected to enter the small car market in the coming years which should boost sales.

The company is also looking forward to introduce new models in India to enhance the presence in the market. Hiroshi Nakagawa, MD, TKM said, “We are looking at introducing new models in India to enhance our presence in the market, besides providing technologically advanced and environmentally friendly cars for Indian customers.”
