Indian writers are indeed coming of age. We got in touch with Vikram Rana, the author of ‘The Equation Of My Love’. He spoke to us on his debut novel, passion for writing and much more in an exclusive interview. This is what he had to say:

1. First off, congratulations on your debut novel! How does it feel to attain success with your first book?
- It certainly feels wonderful to see your dream turn into a reality. Initially, I was a tad nervous about how the response would be. However, I had faith in my work and trust on the readers to try me. The reviews have been wonderful so far, and I am expecting them to continue.

2. How different is “The Equation of My Love” from other adolescent love stories?
- It is entirely a different story for many reasons. Above anything else, it is not a fantasy love story but an honest, real life story that anyone can relate to without extra efforts. Secondly, it is not just a love story but also covers many topics like teenagers’ thought process, burgeoning competition in students’ lives, relationships, teenage obsessions, and existing stereotypes in the society. In addition, it is not about faults in system or lustful relationships but a thriller amidst the believable and realistic love story.

3. From the IIT to working for a global firm; and writing a love story, what has the journey been like?
- The journey has just begun and has been nothing less than a roller coaster so far. It was easy during college but responsibilities of my job make it difficult for me to find time to write. However, it does not bother me much because it is my passion to write. There were times when I could not continue, when I could not focus, and when I had no clue about the next step, but I did not give up. I believe in trying for what I like. I wish to be counted among the esteemed and favorites some day. Therefore, I am working towards it.

4. The Indian readers today are exposed to a lot of Indian fiction. Does a premier institute tag assure success?
- It did few years ago. Now it is the other way around. As a reader myself, we have had enough books about premier institutes from their alumni. Nowadays, an alumnus' novel is assumed to be entirely about his/her institute, its grandness, or its difficult environment. It becomes an extra hurdle for a young author to make sure his/her book does not project a college-describing-novel image. I have spoken very less about IITs in TEOML because enough has been spoken already. A premier institute background might get you early attention but post that it is purely about your story and its content.

5. Amidst all the mathematics and manufacturing equations, how did “The Equation of My Love” happen?
- I always wanted to write a book since high school. My interest grew more during IIT by participating in various literary and cultural events. As years progressed, I became more confident and started penning down TEOML in my pre-final year. The story of TEOML travels to another country in its second half, and I wanted it to be in New York City, USA. Fortunately, I was selected for a research associate position in Jersey City, which is very close to NYC. I felt even the Gods are by my side. Despite deadlines on my intern projects, I wandered in the NYC to gain its experience. Later, my job took me to Texas, and I had very less time to follow up with publishers in India. I never gave up and rest is history.

6. Are there any all time favourite authors?
- I like Sidney Sheldon, Robert Ludlum for their suspense and thriller novels. Their ability to package suspense with emotions inspires me. I like Chetan Bhagat for FPS only.

7. Any particular book you would read time and again?
- If tomorrow comes, Bourne series, and Five point someone.

- 8. Your first book has been very well received. Is a second book in the works?
The appreciation shown by readers for TEOML makes it my responsibility to write more books for them. I am currently working on a thriller and it should be out by next year, 2011.

9. We at Infibeam are promoting your book at the national and international level. What are your thoughts on the initiative?

- It is a blessing for both authors and readers. I receive many queries about TEOML from people settled or studying abroad. Earlier, there was no official store selling desi books internationally. Infibeam has taken this lead, and I am interested to see how the international sales will go. I thank Infibeam for the effort and support.

10. Any message for your fans and budding writers:
Fans – Your support fuels my desire to evolve. My only resource to improve my writing is your feedback. Therefore, do provide your feedback after reading TEOML. On a greater note, never give up on what you like or want. The more we innovate the further our India will excel. Let us make India a better country by being a better citizen.

Budding writers – Uniqueness in your storytelling or writing will differentiate you from the rest. Keep your spirits high and review your manuscript timely for improvements. I wish you all the best.

That was Vinkram Rana, signing off on a happy note. We at Infibeam.com wish him all the success, in his future endeavors.
