General Dynamics board adds Barra

Mary Barra, who last month became the first woman to head GM product development, is joining the board of directors of Virginia defense contractor General Dynamics.

General Dynamics specializes in designing and manufacturing business jets, ships, submarines, combat systems and defense technology.

Barra, a manufacturing engineer, became head of GM product development last month, after CEO Dan Akerson took the organization from powertrain engineer Tom Stephens. Stephens, a GM vice chairman, became chief technology officer and retained responsiblities for research and development.

Barra also serves on the board of trustees at her alma mater, now Flint's Kettering University, and as a director of Inforum, a professional women's alliance.
