TVS Motors plans India’s cheapest-INR 30,000 motorcycle!

Bookmark and Share Nearly 8 years ago, Bajaj Auto nearly created a storm by unveiling India’s lowest priced motorcycle, the Bajaj BYK 100. This 92cc, 6.4 Bhp motorcycle bombed at the hustings, where it’s target audience of college goers were a little too embarrassed to be seen on India’s cheapest motorcycle.

As they say, what goes around usually comes around. Come around it definitely has, with TVS Motors Limited, another Indian homegrown motorcycle and moped maker, all set to foray into the low cost motorcycle segment and make a low cost motorcycle, which will be India’s cheapest yet.

TVS Motors is planning a low cost motorcycle that will sit in the price gap between it’s moped and existing motorcycle range. In other words, TVS Motors could be targeting the INR 30,000 price level, which obviously will be a stiff challenge to achieve given the sharp increase of commodity prices over the years.

Back in 2003, when the Bajaj BYK 100 was launched, it was priced about INR 30,000 on-road Pune. Given the 8 intervening summers, it would be very remarkable if TVS Motors, a firm known for it’s solid engineering skills, can indeed pull this plan off and manage to come up with the INR 30,000 low cost motorcycle.

With this latest piece of buzz, the 100cc motorcycle segment seems all set to get another price warrior, which could really turn the tide in the volumes segment if it is successful and sharply swing TVS Motors’ fortunes in the commuter motorcycle segment when it does see a launch sometime in 2012. Meanwhile, here’s official word from TVS Motors’ President-Marketing, HS Goindi.
