Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is all set for a new era post the Hero Honda split. It in fact challenges to take over Hero in less than seven to eight years. The company is planning to get into the 100cc space with a couple of new models, reports CNBC-TV18's Swati Khandelwal Jain.
With an aim to sell over 35,000-40,000 units in a month and 21 lakh units in FY12, the bike major is looking at increasing production of its 125cc bike Honda Shine. It may also introduce a 100cc engine on the bike. However, production of its 100cc Twister (of which it sells approximately 15,000 units) may be scaled down.
HMSI plans to invest over Rs 2,000 crore by the end of fiscal year 2012 and add 300 new dealers, upping the number to 1,500 by then.
The company is also looking at launching two 100cc bikes and another 150cc scooter and setting up a third plant in India.
"Our products are more in demand in the domestic market. Currently, we have 2.6-lakh waiting customers and plan to increase the capacity to meet market demand," HMSI's President and CEO, Shinji Aoyama said.
HMSI plans to start production of its second facility at Tapukara in Rajasthan in July this year. Its initial annual capacity will be six-lakh units and later it will be expanded to 12-lakh units per annum.
"We will soon expand the capacity to 12-lakh units per year to meet the demand. We have invested around Rs 1,000-crore in the facility," he said.
The company today introduced its global road-sport motorcycle - CBR 250R, priced at Rs 1.51-lakh (ex-showroom in Mumbai), which will be available in the market next month.
"CBR 250R will be available by end-April at our 400 exclusive dealerships Honda India. We plan to sell 30,000 units in the first year," Aoyama said.
