The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) launches the BEE Star Label version 1 for notebook computers and laptops, which is based on the international standard for endorsement of energy efficient products—the ENERGY STAR label.

Speaking on the launch, director general of BEE, Ajay Mathur said, "The BEE STAR endorsement labelling reflects BEE's commitment to recognise most efficient products available in the Indian market. The BEE STAR label is at par with the ENERGY STAR version 5.2 specifications for computers of US EPA. This assumes great significance because the Indian laptop computer market is growing at a very fast rate to match the rise in India's urban population. We sincerely thank MAIT for joining us to kick start this initiative and appeal to the ICT industry to help BEE make this endorsement programme a success across India."

The energy efficiency labelling and standards setting programme under the BEE is intended to reduce the energy consumption of appliances without diminishing the services it provides to consumers.

Some of the key stakeholders of BEE standards and labelling programme for computers are Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT), consumer organisation—Voice, Bureau of India Standards (BIS), independent testing laboratories such as Electronics Regional Test Laboratory (ERTL), Intertek, Underwriters Laboratories and international organisations CLASP and ICF among others.
